The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops reminds us that National Migration Week is “an occasion to grow in appreciation of the challenges faced by migrants and refugees, both in the United States and beyond, and to express solidarity through prayer, accompaniment, and advocacy.”
Throughout the world, many face war, persecution, and displacement. Families leave behind their homes and loved ones seeking safety for their families. Their journeys can require tremendous courage and sacrifice.
Our Catholic faith calls us to uphold the dignity of every person and the sanctity of the family. We pray for all migrants and refugees and for civil authorities responsible for the common good. As people of faith, guided by the teachings of the Church, we advocate for migrant families and their children, including the restoration of peace and stability in their countries of origin, support appropriate humanitarian protections for those legitimately seeking asylum, and work to eradicate the evil of human trafficking, which exploits the most vulnerable.
This year, Pope Leo XIV chose “Even just one of these children” as the theme for the World Day of Migrants and Refugees, recalling Jesus’ words: “Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.”
Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington lives out this mandate each day by accompanying migrants and refugees as they build lives of greater stability and hope. Through emergency support, resettlement services, and other ministry activities, Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington assists individuals and families in difficult circumstances while always honoring their God-given dignity and respecting the laws of the nation.
During National Migration Week, I ask the faithful to pray for migrants and refugees, especially children and families who face uncertainty and hardship. May the Lord open our hearts to their needs and protect the vulnerable.
