Statement from Bishop Michael Burbidge on National Migration Week

January 6 – 12, 2019

This week the Catholic Church in the United States is observing National Migration Week, as it has for nearly half a century. The theme for this year’s observance is “Building Communities of Welcome.” This week provides Catholics with an opportunity to be mindful of the presence and often difficult situations faced by many immigrants and refugees, as well as victims and survivors of human trafficking in our midst.

We are called as a Church to recognize the inherent dignity of all persons, and to accompany and welcome into our communities those who are struggling to start a new and better life. Likewise, we are mindful of those trapped in the scourge of human trafficking. We must work and pray for its end.

You can help build communities of welcome for immigrants and refugees in your parish, neighborhoods and in this Diocese. Our parishes and Catholic Charities programs offer numerous volunteer opportunities and courses in English, citizenship, and workforce training.
