  • Volunteers to work as job mentors to help homeless men find employment. The mentor helps with resumes, applications, interview preparation, training, and the job search. To volunteer, contact Bill DeLaney at billdelaney1492@yahoo.com .
  • Helpers to prepare and serve the evening meal at various times throughout the year; organizations (e.g., parish committees) are encouraged to volunteer for this service.
  • Volunteers to assist with managing the thrift shop, Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Various other duties are available for qualified men and women and older youth. For example:
    • Sorter – assess incoming donated goods and determine appropriate placement of items in the shop
    • Organizer – assist manager with arranging sale items throughout the shop (shelving, hanging, and displaying)
    • Sales associate – serve as retail floor assistant in selling and processing distribution or purchasing of thrift store stock
    • Handyman – work with the manager to do “touch-up” as needed, small repairs, shelving installations, display set-ups, painting, clean-up, etc.

    • Volunteers to accept, pick-up, re-register, and transfer ownership of donated cars for Catholic Charities’ car ministry. This program accepts used cars in good working condition and provides them to needy individuals. Many individuals and families have seen their lives take a turn for the better when Catholic Charities provided them with a car that allowed them to get to a job on time, get a child to the doctor, or buy and transport groceries. Almost a thousand cars have been given to people in need. Please help keep the car ministry going. Interested volunteers may call 703-841-2531 or e-mail to hburke@ccda.net.
    • Volunteers to research grant opportunities and identify organizations or foundations that offer grant monies to nonprofit social service agencies, so that Catholic Charities can consider preparing and submitting grant applications.
    • Office helpers – answer phones, light typing, etc.
    • Special events assistants: Catholic Charities has special events throughout the year and relies on volunteers to assist with their successful implementation.

    • A clerical volunteer to help a half-day per week
    • Volunteers to serve as foster parents and provide a loving home for infants and children.
    • A certified Red Cross CPR instructor to teach infant-and-child CPR, on a volunteer or low-cost basis.
    • Volunteers to drive pregnant clients to medical appointments, interviews with their social workers, etc.

    Spanish-English Interpreter/Translator Volunteer:
    Volunteer needed to work with an immigration staff attorney, especially during intake, to interpret from Spanish-speaking clients; to translate client’s complex personal statements to be used as the basis of their immigration case; and to assist staff to explain program achievements, upcoming events, trainings, grants and other events to the Latino Spanish-speaking community.     ESL survey volunteer: volunteer needed to develop and administer a student satisfaction survey, a survey tracking those affected by the events of 9/11, and a volunteer self-assessment survey; to record and manage the results and deliver them to Hogar staff; and to prepare a summary article for E-nunciations newsletter.     ESL "swap meet" volunteer: volunteer needed to jazz up the “swap meet” ESL materials developed by staff and teacher volunteers and to create a plan for publishing a book from the “swap meet” materials. Call Amy at ext. 222 or e-mail to awhite@ccda.net.
    ESL scrapbook volunteer: volunteer needed to design, develop and maintain a scrapbook to capture the excellence and passion of the Hogar Hispano ESL program; and to take photos and collect related program material at student classes, trainings and other events.     ESL outreach coordinator: volunteer needed to explore northern Virginia service businesses, apartments, bus stations and so forth to pass out Hogar Hispano marketing material; to record and organize the names and addresses of all locations that receive Hogar Hispano information; and to attend community meetings and events to pass out Hogar Hispano marketing material.     ESL technical support volunteer: Manage computer classroom at Hogar Hispano’s main site; manage and troubleshoot LAN, Internet network and computer systems; setup and upgrade computer systems and software; and train staff and volunteers on windows operating systems and applications.     ESL Data Entry Volunteer: Volunteers are needed to assist the ESL program input important student data.
    Training is provided. The database used is easy to manage. Call Amy at ext. 222 or e-mail to awhite@ccda.net.
    ESL High School Intern: Student volunteers are needed to help with registration, input student data, advertise classes, conduct outreach, assist with updating ESL text, prepare end-of-class party, and other duties. Duration: the school year; one afternoon per week. Applicants must be high school juniors or seniors and have parental permission. Students interested in applying for these positions must send a letter explaining their qualifications for the position and why they would like to work for Catholic Charities' Hogar Hispano and include a letter of reference from one of their high school teachers.     ESL site coordinator volunteer: (a) At beginning of Semester, develop a plan to market and report on the ESL program within each site, i.e., events at a church, newsletter at a community center and so forth; build an ongoing relationship with site pastor or manager and meet periodically to report on success of the program; invite teachers to site orientation and student registration day; administer student registration; deliver student payments and registration forms to Hogar Hispano program coordinator; communicate program procedures and schedules to teachers; deliver relevant materials to volunteers and students; and assist teachers in administering tests and surveys. (b) Throughout the year, open and close site classrooms/buildings; engage in supporting and encouraging teachers and students during class days; report any teacher/student needs or requests to program coordinator; administer a process for taking student attendance to volunteers; inform teachers of schedule changes, new information and in-service opportunities; train and manage new/substitute teachers; and substitute for teachers when necessary.     ESL Teachers: Teach Adult ESL. Training is provided and a second language is not required. Volunteers teach one class a week in northern Virginia. Call Amy at ext. 222 or e-mail to awhite@ccda.net.
    Citizenship Assistance: Volunteers assist eight Saturdays a year to help immigrants complete citizenship applications. In addition, help is needed for citizenship classes that are offered at several locations and times for immigrants preparing to take the naturalization exam. Call 703-534-9805.
    Immigrant Advocacy: Volunteers help research local area services for immigrants; assist with intake and simple translations; and return phone calls and help with various other administrative tasks. Call Amy at ext. 222 or e-mail to awhite@ccda.net.
    Legal Aide: Interns assist the immigration legal services department with client case work. The intern will work with clients to prepare immigration-related applications, prepare clients for administrative interviews before the U.S. Citizenship and Immigrations Services, and research and draft legal memoranda. One to two days per week; hours to be arranged.     • Men and women volunteers who will start mentoring inmates in both English & Spanish in Fairfax Adult Detention Center, Arlington Jail, Loudoun Adult Detention Center, Leesburg, and Prince William Adult Detention Center in Manassas before they are released and then continue mentoring them when they go home to the communities.
      • Men and women  volunteers who know how to facilitate Bible Study in English & Spanish for the following facilities:        Fairfax Adult Detention Center, Arlington Jail, Loudoun Adult Detention Center (Leesburg), and Prince William Adult Detention Center (Manassas).      
      • Men and Women volunteers who could mentor inmates inside the prisons and jails in English and Spanish for the following facilities: Fairfax Adult Detention Center,  Arlington Jail,  Loudoun Adult Detention Center,  and Prince William Adult Detention Center.
      • Men who could teach Pre-GED & ESL to male prisoners and facilitate prayer & Scripture reflection in the following facilities: White Post Detention Center (White Post, VA) and White Post Diversion Center (White Post, VA).
      • Young men and women who could visit and work with juvenile inmates at  the following facilities: Rappahannock Juvenile Detention Center (Stafford, VA) and NOVA Juvenile Detention Center (Alexandria, VA).
