The St. Lucy Project Mission Statement
Develop community-wide awareness and sensitivity to reduce hunger and access resources to distribute food to reduce food insecurity throughout the 21 counties and 7 major cities of the Arlington Diocese in Northern Virginia when and where it is needed, as resources permit, without regard to ethnicity, religious belief, or other protected status.
As the Catholic response to hunger in the Diocese, this initiative significantly strengthens the Catholic engagement in the service to the poor. Every Catholic – and other people of good will --will have an opportunity to live out his/her faith by engaging in this outreach to the hungry. As Christ said: ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’ (Matt 25:40)
Almost a quarter of a million people in the Arlington Diocese are “Food Insecure”, meaning they do not know where their next meal will be coming from. The St. Lucy Project warehouse is the distribution center which augments its pantry network to alleviate food insecurity; it takes food donations, but not walk-in clients. It supplies CCDA pantry locations at Christ House in Alexandria, its Leesburg Regional Office, and Loaves and Fishes in Front Royal -- in addition to its network of Catholic parish and Interfaith/community based organization food pantries with healthy food throughout the diocese. The centralized warehouse location in Manassas allows the St. Lucy Project easy access to major highways and to every region in the diocese.
From this warehouse, where the food is received, sorted and boxed for delivery, a fleet of refrigerated trucks and vans distribute food throughout the Diocese of Arlington allowing the St. Lucy Project to deliver healthy food such as meat and fresh produce.
There are a wide variety of volunteer opportunities at The St. Lucy Project. Some are 1) Conducting a food drive at your parish, school, or business; 2) Sorting and packing food at the Manassas warehouse; 3) Driving a van or truck to make deliveries, and 4) Helping clients in our pantry network across the Diocese.
The image of St. Lucy has her holding a stalk of wheat in one hand and a dish with eyes in the other. The wheat is to remind us of her passion to feed the hungry. There are many stories of her bringing bread to early Christians hiding in the Catacombs in the dead of night so they would not starve. She would often wear a wreath of candles on her head to light her way. The eyes symbolize that she is the Patron Saint to the blind; and quite often, we are blind to the hungry in our own communities. This is why St. Lucy is our Patron Saint. May she always guide us to see the hungry and help feed them.
