Catholic Charities Grows! The Community Garden of Christ House

Alexandria, Virginia,  May 23, 2013 – Each night of the year, Catholic Charities provides an evening meal for the hungry at Christ House, located in Old Town Alexandria. Between 50 and 70 diners each night depend on our hot meals for nourishment. With the help of our many dedicated and hardworking volunteer cooks, we are hoping that our meals will be tastier and healthier than ever. Fresh tomatoes, herbs, peppers, carrots, onions, and green beans will soon adorn our dinner plates thanks to the creation of the Community Garden at Christ House. These fresh veggies will also be part of our food pantry offerings by the end of the summer!

The Community Garden is now just a brown patch of dirt located behind Christ House in Old Town Alexandria. We will transform this space into a wonderful garden that will yield an abundance of fresh vegetables for those who are hungry. The Community Garden will be dug, hoed, watered, weeded and tended by volunteers from the community along with the residents of Christ House.

Groundbreaking on the Garden will begin on Saturday, June 1st at 10 a.m. We need volunteers who don’t mind getting dirty to come and help us pull weeds, till the soil, and plant our vegetables. We also need donations! We need: gardening tools, like shovels, hoes, and hand trowels: hoses and sprinklers; bags of compost and potting soil; plant stakes and labels; string and stakes; vegetable plants. Monetary donations are also appreciated. Checks can be made out to Catholic Charities with “Community Garden” on the info line.

If you would like to volunteer, or donate, please contact Sister Ani Juan at Christ House, at, or by calling (703) 548-4227 ext. 101.

To drop off donations, please stop by Christ House at 131 South West Street, Alexandria. We are located on West Street, between Duke and King Streets.
